Is “Innovation Included” In Your Enterprise Mobile App?

By Lindsey Tishgart | September 26, 2013

When you’re constantly struggling to just keep up, it’s nearly impossible to find the time to focus on innovation or even adequately adjust to the outlier innovative changes that impact your organization. The release of iOS7 was a hard lesson for many companies using enterprise mobile apps. One off and custom designed mobile apps aimed at supporting the enablement of enterprise functions, required a initial large investment and forced restriction to a single platform. Now that iOS7 has been released and hybrid mobile device environments are the norm, companies need to reevaluate their mobility partners.

It’s time to partner with technology companies that future proof your mobile apps and provide mobile solutions with innovation included.

What does future proof mean?

Future proof simply means that as your business changes and technology continues to innovate, you are minimizing any negative consequences due to these shifts. Also, by accounting for future shifts, you are in a better position to seize new opportunities than your competition. It’s critical to partner with a mobile application provider that has an enterprise software approach.  This means that your app has all of the robust qualities of an enterprise solution with innovation driven collectively across a vast company/user base.

Back to the Equation

So for all you enterprisers out there that are struggling with buy vs. build and custom vs. not, I came up with a simple little equation to help you determine if you’re future proof yet. It’s no E=MC2 but it works.
Future Proofing Equation

The first piece of the equation is enabling a mobilized enterprise. Enterprise mobilization is already becoming common practice and employees are relying more and more on their go-to business mobile apps. Your business apps should enable core functions and augment the effectiveness of core enterprise software that is already in place.

Now that you’ve mobilized, you have to add in the other part of the equation —platform agnosticism. Think about it. If you build your custom app and format your digital content and fine-tune the mobile end-user experience around only one device and one platform, what happens to the rest of your users? To top it off, a year later a newer, better, and vastly wider adopted device/platform comes along. You have to revamp everything. Not only is it going to cost you time; it’s going to cost you more money and further strain already restricted resources.

Most companies support BYOD or hybrid policies for their mobile device environment, meaning that you have to accommodate a complex landscape that can include: iOS, Windows8 and Android platforms.

Just “keeping up” hinders innovation. Relying on an internally built app or custom app from a non-strategic outside technology party means that you are always a few steps behind. By partnering with an enterprise mobile technology provider you get access to innovation and allow for the app to be used across all mobile platforms.
