If digital transformation had an all-star game, the annual SAP SAPPHIRE NOW + ASUG Annual Conference would be it. Major brands from all over the world attend the event to get the latest and greatest on how digital transformation can impact their business. The 3-day event, taking place May 16th-18th at the Orange County Convention Center, is expected to bring in 20,000+ attendees this year. We are excited to announce that Mediafly will be participating in the event at booth #1288A, where we’ll be advising attendees on how Evolved Selling™ can impact (read: improve) their digital transformation initiatives.

Oh, and did we mention Kobe Bryant and Derek Jeter will be keynote speakers at the event?

Now, you might be wondering, what do Kobe and Derek have to do with digital transformation? Believe it or not, there are some key lessons you can take away from them. While we wouldn’t recommend you hire Kobe or Derek to help guide you through your digital journey, their experience playing on winning teams with numerous championships under their belts can help give insight on the foundation for a digital transformation game plan built for champions.

Step One: Align at Every Position

In both baseball and basketball, every player on a team has a particular role that requires designated skills. It’s crucial that each player works together like a well-oiled machine, with value added in every position. The most successful teams have players that are a master of their skills, while also complementing other teammates.

When it comes to organizations, we can apply the team function in the same capacity. A study from Forrester found that 43% of organizations saw internal departments competing amongst each other as the biggest barrier to digital transformation. It is imperative that silos be broken down so that the transformation isn’t just happening in one department but across the organization. When culture, employees, and structure are aligned, the challenges of a constantly changing digital landscape can be defeated more easily.

Step Two: Rebound for Control

In basketball, a missed basket can turn out to be a gained opportunity for either defense or offense. Whichever team gets the rebound first, gets control of the ball and can make a strategic play. It’s how well a team can be rebound that determines if there will be a turnover.

Like a missed basket, there will always be setbacks when executing digital transformation within an organization. A recent MIT study found that 30% of executives don’t have access to the resources and opportunities needed to develop and thrive in a digital environment. A limit in resources puts several roadblocks in the transformation process, causing organizations to have to find a way to rebound from these roadblocks to be successful. One way to alleviate this is by connecting with digital transformation experts and advisors that can help organizations build plans on how to attain the resources needed to stay on track.

Step Three: Execute the Game Plan with Focus

Maintaining focus on a game plan is what leads to a winning recipe. When things get intense, the teams that keep their cool and stay focused are usually a lot more successful than teams that fall apart under pressure.

When it comes to embracing digital transformation, many executives are feeling the heat on timeline and goals. A recent study revealed that 55% of companies say the timeframe to adopt full digital transformation is one year or less. The same study found that 85% of enterprise decision makers felt they have a limited timeframe of two years to make significant inroads before they start to see financial repercussions. This timeline makes it crucial that organizations build a game plan and stay focused on that plan. Companies will need to invest the appropriate amount of time and resources to avoid having to go back to the drawing board and starting over due to poor planning.
