Augmented Reality for the Enterprise

By Carson Conant | July 18, 2012

Augmented Reality is a phrase that is tossed around a lot today, but few people really know what it means. The term is primarily associated with video games on iPad, iPhone and Android, that allow you to interact with elements of the game in and around your physical space. For example, a game that allows you to shoot at 3-D helicopters that you see flying around your kitchen when you look through the camera’s view on your mobile device.

We at Mediafly are seeing keen interest from large enterprise companies looking to take advantage of Augmented Reality to help their customers, prospects, sales reps and internal staff see and understand the value of their products and services. For example, a medical device sales rep could show a doctor a new orthopedic apparatus in a new engaging way — by viewing a 3-D image of it right on the desk or conference table in front of them.

Here is a brief video that shows how a virtual car can be rendered on a “target image” so that it shows up on your desk. You can then move, resize, and zoom into/out of the object.

Example enterprise use case

An example of an enterprise using Augmented Reality would be an auto company providing an app that allowed you to view a full size view of your new car on your drive way. You could walk around the car, change colors, features, etc. such as shown here for a hypothetical Audi AR app:

Augmented Reality FAQs

1) Is the object embedded in the piece of paper?

No, the piece of paper is called the “target image”. It could be just about anything — a page in a brochure or a business card. The Augmented Reality app looks at the target image to understand the plane of your “real space.” In the case above it is a desk. The app then renders the object on top of the target image.

2) Can you switch between objects?

Yes, An Augmented Reality-enabled app can sync down different objects from the “cloud” so that the user could switch between them.
