The always-interesting Internet Trends report from Mary Meeker (now of KPCB) was just released (May 30). Many of the trends we have personally seen at Mediafly are borne out by Mary Meeker’s report, and we believe the ascendancy of tablets and newer-generation smartphones for enterprise use will only accelerate in the coming years.
Some of the report highlights are below:
- In 2011, the number of Internet users grew to 2.3 Billion= 8% Growth, Driven by Emerging Markets
- China ranks as #1, now with 513 million users, adding 215 million users between 2008-11
- USA ranks #1 in mobile 3G data subscribers, with 31% year-over-year growth. Globally, only 18% of subscribers subscribe to 3G services
- iPad continues to be a HOT product: initial adoption = 3x initial adoption of iPhone
- Android phone adoption is ramping up even faster (4x) for initial adoption vs. iPhone
- Room to grow: smartphones still only represent 16% of total subscribers globally
- Impressive 29% of USA adults own a tablet / eReader, up from 2% less than three years ago
- In advertising, newspaper revenue was surpassed by Internet in 2010, but mobile advertising is still in its infancy (Madison Avenue lags trends)
- Connectivity & new devices have sparked the re-imagination of virtually any industry or interaction– from communications, music and entertainment to healthcare, business, education, government, and beyond
