“In this scene, there are two big takeaways. The first is when Don Draper tells his client that doing the same thing over and over, without results, is a dangerous game to play. He would rather walk away from the business than try to convince his customer why they need to take a chance on a new approach. He creates trust between them by acknowledging that trying a new route isn’t an easy thing to do, but neither is repeating a failed plan. Too often, salespeople will try to sell everything to everyone, when it’s much better to sell only to those who have a need.
The second takeaway is Don becomes an advisor to his client by teaching him something new about his target audience. Don says ‘women want choices, they’re unique,’ and with this lipstick, they’ll be empowered to ‘mark their man.’ The customer is in awe by the power his advertisement can have and wants to continue the conversation to learn more”.
