This new technology transformation we are currently experiencing is what some are calling the third tier of the IT platform. The first tier is the mainframe computer, the second is the personal computer, and the third—the next phase of IT—is the cloud, social networks, Big Data analytics, and mobility according to TechnologyFirst.org. You can think of it like this: If we were to say that the third tier was a professional sports team, then the cloud, social media, Big Data analytics and mobility would be the starting line-up.

As the third tier of the IT platform evolves, its impact on businesses continues to grow. Content can be managed more efficiently than ever before. When these technologies are adapted in the business world, as Danny Molhoek points out in Business Computing World, they form an entirely “new platform for industry and enterprise innovation and growth.”

Now, in true sporting event form, let’s introduce our star players and uncover what unique attributes they bring to the team.

Cloud

The cloud has quickly become the go-to choice as a way to manage business operations. It provides an easy, secure and effective way to share data. With the cloud, we have a way to organize and manage content from virtually anywhere. Content creators have the ability to distribute content to teams spread across the globe.

The cloud has brought data to a central location, allowing employees to eliminate the chains that used to anchor them to their desks. As long as the correct security measures are in place, there is no stopping the cloud from bringing enhanced productivity and success to businesses everywhere.

Big Data Analytics

Data is everywhere—just think of all the documents, emails, excel spreadsheets, and more that are created every single day. Big Data gives businesses insight into their management and operations. Together, Big Data and the cloud give us the ability to bring unstructured content from distinct silos into one centralized location, so analytics can truly shine as the MVP.

Social

Social media is the main avenue through which social connections are made. Social can fuel communications in business, internally and externally. One of the most important and compelling aspects of social is that you can connect with others in real time for instant feedback from customers, prospects, and employees. Social has revolutionized how B2B and B2C customers interact with the world, so it makes sense that it is a part of the third tier.

Mobility

Last, but certainly not least, let’s talk about mobility. It is easy to argue that mobile is the honorary captain of the third tier team. Mobility has led to a completely new way of doing business in every industry. The cloud, social and Big Data analytics are now being accessed through mobile devices. Businesses are taking advantage of being able to access content from a smartphone or tablet.

By thinking about these technologies as a team, instead of solo acts, businesses can gain a whole new perspective on how to run a successful company. Together, the cloud, social, Big Data analytics and mobile can bring true value to the enterprise. This value can undoubtedly lead to innovation, giving you the competitive advantage you need to succeed.
