In an island of bitter lemons
Where the moon's cool fevers burn
From the dark globes of the fruit,

And the dry grass underfoot
Tortures memory and revises
Habits half a lifetime dead

Better leave the rest unsaid,
Beauty, darkness, vehemence
Let the old sea-nurses keep

Their memorials of sleep
And the Greek sea's curly head
Keep its calm like tears unshed

Keep its calms like tears unshed.

Bitter Lemons

THE MOON shines inside my heart, But my blind eyes cannot see it: The moon is in me, deep within, And in me also is the sun. The unstruck drum of Eternity Sounds and yet does not sound in me; For if it’s struck or if it’s not My poor deaf ears cannot hear it; While I cry out for I and Mine, My works are as nought, down within: When love of I and Mine is dead, This will end the work of the Lord. For all work has no other aim Than getting of knowledge from Him: When that comes, we will have our joy, And our work may be put away. The flower blooms to make the fruit: When the fruit comes, the bloom’s forgot. The musk is fragrant in the deer, The stag will come to cover her; But she seeks not herself to mate: She goes in quest of grass to eat. Unstruck Drum of Eternity – Poetry of Kabir English Adaptation: Jabez L. Van Cleef (*) Podcast Mix by DJ Bulut: 1. Kabir’s voice by Jabez L. Van Cleef 2. Ney Flute Improvisation by Omer Bildik 3. The End Legendary Trance by Harem (Percussion) & Martin Spencer 4. Ab-I Lâ'l by Mercan Dede 5. Ney Flute Improvisation by Kudsi Erguner (*) To hear more poetry, search on full name Jabez L. Thank you for all your emails asking for more belly tunes. Any playful melody can be versioned into a bellydance tune when musical arrangements, drum, and base patterns are fused properly. Possibilities are endless and so is the joy that our minds and bodies will experience. On this podcast, I included a diverse collection of high energy music that Turks would consider suitable for bellydancing . The mix is also suitable as an upbeat meditation. Shake on ! artists in this order (+styles) : 0:11 baba zula & mad professor (psycho-belly, folk, dub) 3:17 cay taylan (chiftetelli, club-dub) 7:50 harem, umit kuzer & martin cru spencer (chiftetelli, house) 11:56 barbaros erköse (gypsy, classical) 17:00 hüsnü senlendirirci (gypsy, folk, jazz fusion) 21:45 harem & adnan varveren (gypsy, classical) 24:27 harem & martin cru spencer (house, trance) 30:08 kopruler & gurel agirbas (western classical, gypsy, sufi)

Turkish folk music (Türk Halk Müziği) inherits from many ancient civilizations that lived in Anatolia and the Ottoman territories in Europe and Asia. This podcast episode is a mix of folk-infused contemporary music. The show gradually gets happier and it has a very happy ending :) Anatolian, Greek, Turkmen, Armenian, Iranian, Azeri, Laz, and Kurdish musicians all recite very similar folk melodies and rhythms. The Hittite people of Anatolia are one of the oldest civilizations from whom we inherit ideas, culture and language. Importance of love, peace, nature, community and collaboration... Some of the ancient Greek gods can be traced back to ancient Anatolia. In 1288 B.C, eight hundred years before the Battle of Thermopylae (subject of movie 300), the Hittites and Egyptians met in the battle of Kadesh. This battle was followed by one of the world's first peace treaties. The resulting peace is also mentioned in the bible. The Kadesh Treaty clay tablet carved by the Hittites and the Egyptians is in Istanbul Archeological Museum. A replica of the Treaty has been presented by the Turkish Government as a gift to the UN. It is on display at UN Headquarters, at the entrance to the Security Council chamber. We often associate music from India and East/South Asia, with piece and tranquility. Middle Eastern music often brings out feelings of sadness due to lost love but encourages us to celebrate life regardless of difficulties. Global fusion music is under the influence of the east and the west. This is definely a good thing. Do you agree with that? This partially progressive podcast concentrates on Turkish folk, jaz fusion, and pop that sound Far Eastern. If you want to also hear Australian Aboriginal influence on Turkish music, please check out the “Universal Soul Explosion” episode. That episode features the Australian didgeridoo during the first 5 minutes of the mix (“Hayalname” by Mercan Dede). Music list: 1. Hint (India) by Harem 2. Buda by Sertab Erener 3. Ab-i Lal by Mercan Dede 4. Vardim Hint Eline by Orientation 5. 40. yil by Baris Manco

On bulut.podomatic.com, there is a photo of a door. I took this picture in a mountain village on the island of Cyprus. It was a beautiful warm day with a refreshing sea breeze. I was walking around smelling mountain flowers and looking for house doors to take pictures of. This particular door stood on the side of a narrow stone pathway. It was not a house door or a garden gate. It wasn’t even a real door. It was a monument! I am finding out that our minds have many doors that need to be unlocked. We spend our life solving our own mysteries. We must learn to enjoy this pursuit. This is the time of the year when people turn to Astrological signs. Don’t forget to also check for answers that are already embedded in you. This is another upbeat episode. Let’s use this music to dance and meditate. Enjoy! “You’ve been knocking on doors looking for answers. The door opens. You’ve been knocking from the inside…” – Rumi, Mevlana Celaleddin Music: 1. Intro by Bulut 2. Touch - Tarkan 3. Adagio - Kopruler / Two Worlds 4. Vienna - Ultravox (European band from the 80s) 5. Bu Gece Kir Zincirlerini (Break Your Chains Tonight) - Tarkan 6. Music - Sertab Erener’s version of Madonna’s “Music” 7. Boşver (Newer mind) - Izel 8. Dance Mediterrania - Simon Shaheen (Palestinian musician living in USA)

For My Friend: Marina Since Peace on Earth is in our hearts at this time of the year, I am dedicating this episode to Turks and Greeks. We share some sad and some happy history together. When we use our creative positive energy, we collaborate well together. The music in this episode features vocals both in Turkish and Greek. Turkish and Greek musicians are playing together on many of these recordings. The real St. Nicholas was probably from a Greek origin and he lived in what is now modern Turkey. Is St. Nick the same person as Santa Claus? The legends are related. The name “Santa Claus” is the American pronunciation of the Dutch name Sinterklaas or Sint Nikolaas. He has a lot of names. Too many to list here. Some people believe Santa lives in northern Finland. The Coca Cola Company popularized Santa Claus in the USA in the 1930s. The "Noel on the Beach" theme may make more sense if you listen to the following news clip about St. Nick from the National Public Radio: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6655033 Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas Music: Music list will be added at a later date.

I mixed various styles in this episode including traditional Sufi style Ney flute, dub, reggae, chiftetelli and Istanbul house. No pop. Starts out slow and then... Surprise ! The poem below is by Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi. It was written in the 12th century in Persian (Farsi). The English translation is by Coleman Barks who wrote at least 3 great books on Rumi’s poetry. The words don’t seem to rhyme poetically but it is the best translation that I’ve seen so far: "Not Christian or Jew or Muslim, not Hindu, Buddhist, Sufi, or Zen. Not any religion or cultural system. I am not from the East or the West, not out of the ocean or up from the ground, not natural or ethereal, not composed of elements at all. I do not exist, am not an entity in this world or in the next, did not descend from Adam and Eve or any origin story. My place is placeless, a trace of the traceless. Neither body nor soul. I belong to the beloved, have seen the two worlds as one and that one call to and know. First, last, outer, inner, only that breath, breathing human being." - Rumi, Mevlana Celaleddin MUSIC: 00:00 Podcast intro 00:21 Nay (Ney) flute improvisation – Kudsi Erguner 02:30 Sufi Service Reggae – Okay Temiz 10:26 Perfect Sence – Noctophobia + First Contact - Hakan Ünsal 16:44 Neva Hedzaz - Marika Kanaropulo 19: 56 Nay (Ney) flute improvisation – Kudsi Erguner

"It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception". Albert Einstein, speaking about his relativity theory. Bulut's Comments: How would you go about comparing musical appreciation or any other kind of pleasure? Albert Einstein’s relativity theory supports the idea that things which appear simultaneous to an observer in one system may not appear simultaneous to an observer in another system. Naturally each person would perceive, process and interpret music in a different way. People that are from the same cultural system are likely to share some perceptions including perceptions that are musical. I believe that fast and repetitious music may cause a reflex response in our brain putting us into a trance state. While in trance, we feel better connected to the universe. Let’s set our minds and hearts free, and let music transport us to a place where time, space and everything in between is connected as ONE. Music: 1. Organic Beats by Murat U and Aytekin K 2. Iki Delilik by Kivanch K and Cem O (remix of a Sezen Aksu original) 3. Sultan’s Beat by Can H and Murat T 4. Perisanim Simdi by Kivanch K and Cem O (remix of a Sezen Aksu original) 5. Jharie’s Dream by Can H and Murat T 6. Trippin on the City Walls by Deep (my cousin Mustafa Goze’s ambient band project, North Cyprus)
