If 3D is the chicken and the Avatar DVD is the egg, somehow we should all get free chickens or 3D is DOA. Or something like that. We've all still got a bit of a BBQ hangover from our time in Austin, but at least Rafe's here to make a little sense. Oh, wait, he came up with the 3D chicken thing. Anyway, Facebook rules the Web, IE 9 may or may not embrace actual standards, and Droid users are getting 2.1, finally. We're home.

Dear BOL,

Seen this article and thought I would pass it along.

Fox to mine “Avatar” DVD release three times

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1611067220100316

Now if I read between the lines here I think what Fox is trying to say is that while there might be a few people that have 3D TV out there, there will not be enough to justify making a bunch of DVD with the 3D version on it.

Which in that case in November when the THIRD release date comes around, maybe it will not happen?

Which mean 3D TV is dead before it even gets started, If I'm not mistaken you get more people interested in a new product or technology by putting popular current content into that form.

Any why just wanted to get your thoughts, or give you more fuel for the fire.

As always LOVE THE SHOW

Hey Buzz Crew,

I just thought I'd write to thank you guys for being perfect easter egg/cameo material.

Every year, we here at the University of Utah law school stage a big counter-terrorism simulation.

It gets bigger every year–this year we're working together with Utah government officials, local news, and even the National Defense University. Essentially, 19 students are given official roles to play as they fight to save the U.S. and the world from global crisis.

Students get their simulated news about world events from our fake "UNN" news site, and while in the past we've left most of it blank, this year we've upped the realism by populating it with real (and real-ish) news ahead of time so the students playing simulated government response roles will feel more like they're in the middle of the action right from the start. And what better stuff to fill the technology and opinion sections with than BOL, a resurrection of Spectaclefest, and links to Molly Rants?

Who knows, maybe we'll connect with some other closet BOL fans in the area afterward? You can check out UNN at http://simulation.law.utah.edu and more on the simulation itself at http://today.law.utah.edu/counter-terrorism-simulation

It officially kicks off on the 19th, but students should be looking at it ahead of time already. We'll open up viewer pre-show chat on the 15th, too. (http://dashboard.law.utah.edu/simulation-2010/)

Also (and this is my second reason for emailing you) if CNET high command wishes us not to include any of this, please let me know. Thanks!

Love. The. Show.

Hey all

Bob from VA here

I work as a server in a restaurant in Richmond, VA. I see all kinds of tech all the time. I see Iphones every once in a while. I saw a Kindle the other day, but one thing I see every day multiple times a day is the Droid. I counted today and I saw 4 different guests with them.

Next random thought: Opera whined enough to get the browser ballet into Windows, so they may be the ones up to challenging Apples app store rules.

Sounds like I am bashing Apple a bit here, but I have a touch and love it. Now I’m off to play Plants vs Zombies on it. Since your done reading this you should do the same.

LOVE THE SHOW!

**********

First I must say, I am not an Opera fanboy, and I apologize if I am

one of many who points this out.

Apple contacted Opera Software when they first announced Opera Mini

for the iPhone.

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=no&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.digi.no%2F835579%2Fapple-ringte-opera

(Translated by GoogleTranslate)

This does not nessisarily mean it will get approved, but how many

developers receeves a phone call from Apple.

The technical difference with Opera Mini and a real webbrowser might

be enought to get safely through the review process. When a page is

loaded in Opera Mini it goes through servers where it is rendered and

compressed. Your phone receeves a binary blob which is renderd by the

phone. From the endusers perspective there is no difference though. So

webrendering is not done on the phone but operas servers.

Website — (HTML/CSS/JS etc.) —> Opera servers, rendering and

compression — (Small Binary Blob) —> your ISP — (Small Binary

Blob) —> Mobile nettwork — (Small Binary Blob) —> Your phone

This means you can not have a direct encrypted connection with a

website though, So you should not use this with your bank. Though it

does reduce the data sendt over the carrier nettwork. (Not everyone

has an all you can eat data plan.)

Opera Mini should not be confused with Opera Mobile, a real

webbrowser, which will probably never get approved.

Love the show

Hey Buzz Crew!

I have been a listener for a long time, and recently with the increased talk about ACTA, I have decided to do something about it. What can a nobody like me do to stop this treaty, you ask? Why, create a Facebook group of course! The link is here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wall&gid=387879991802 .

I think the biggest problem here is not enough people know what ACTA is. I think that a Facebook group might just help with that.

Lets fight this thing by spreading the word.

Patent law does have it’s place in society, and we do need it to protect, not only the big company but the small company. While there may be problems with the system, change to the system must be gradual and measured. Wholesale removal of the system re: software patents would result in a host of unintended consequences as well as the removal of billions, if not trillions, of capital assets.

Yes, big companies use their patent stick to beat off little companies. But what mechanism would you propose be used by a big company to prevent a little company from stealing something and implementing it quickly and confusing the marketplace. If there was a device that looked like an iPhone and kind worked like one, but which Apple couldn’t remove from the marketplace, the harm to Apple’s reputation would be immeasurable. Both in marketshare and in reputation. Patents are one method that they use to protect themselves. And patents at the corporate level are negotiating tools, nothing more. If Apple is suing HTC, one of the end results may be a revenue stream to Apple. Look at QualComm. They don’t manufacture handsets anymore but they are still making money.

Perhaps, the duration of patents with respect to software is too long. And yes, the courts don’t understand this newfangled Internet tubes we use. Congress doesn’t either, to be honest.

The debate on the show, which is a little bit one-sided has been going on for a long time and will be going on for a long while. It’s just the nature of the beast. Shakespeare said that the first step in overthrowing the government was to kill all the lawyers. We are here to protect people and society. Some of us may abuse that privilege but most of us are good stewards of it.

Cheers,

Bob

Hey Buzz Crew,

On Episode 1182, you talked about a new way for your boss to track what

you’re doing. Well, I already figured out a “hack” to make sure your boss

doesn’t know what you’re doing! What’s required? A Roomba and something to

hold your phone down. All you do is tie your phone to the Roomba, and

whenever you want to go out somewhere, turn the Roomba on (with the phone

attached of course). That way you will be moving around, and your boss

won’t think you’re dead! Make sure you find a Roomba or some robot that

can also go up and down the stairs so your boss doesn’t think you’re

pacing back and forth all the time.

This is Fr. Robert Ballecer, SJ from Washington DC. (PadreSJ in the chatroom)

In episode 1181 (@ 3:29) Brian Cooley poo poos the introduction the Cisco CRS-3, saying “They do all this assuming the entire Internet is populated with these. I mean they forget this is the fastest thing on the Internet and the Internet runs as slow as the slowest gateway on the Internet. So until this hardware propagates everywhere this will be sitting around drumming its fingers like a bunch of older hardware.”

(Please have Molly read this in her Nerd voice — for this is most certainly nerdy)

While the “weakest link” analogy is most often the case when speaking of advancements in IT, where the technology will only work as fast as its slowest component, it isn’t true in a case of this scale. It helps to think of an ISP as an outwardly concentric network comprised of the “core” (the center) and “edge” (the part of the network that actually connects to customers.) — The edge networks have been fast enough for years, with most user’s bandwidth needs not scraping the sides of a even a 10 Megabit connection to the ISP. However, as you get closer to the core all those millions of 10 Megabit connections quickly overwhelm (oversubscribe) the core router. With the Cisco announcement of the CRS-3, an ISP could now serve 3,220,000 customers with a 100 Megabit link without oversubscribing and WITHOUT DEPLOYING THEM EVERYWHERE. Put a few of these in key places in the core, and bip-bam-boom, you’ve got yourself a next-gen network capable of downloading every episode of BOL directly into the brains of our future army of Cylon babies.

More to the point, as long as there are at least two of these deployed in an Enterprise or ISP-class network, they will never be “drumming their fingers.”

Peace,

Fr. Robert

Anyway… It doesn’t look like Microsoft was Censoring because iPHone is a competitor, because if you go to bing.com and search for adwords, you will see that Google is actually an advertiser… if Microsoft wanted to censor, you’d think they’d deny Google’s ad.

Lastly, Tom you were correct, Amazon stopped the associates program in North Carolina because of the taxes, I was an associate in NC and they cut me off. I fixed it by getting a UPS store mail box in South Carolina(two miles from me) and using that address for my associates account, and viola I’m back in the associates program…

Just thought this link would be of interest. http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article7053254.ece

Seems like Howard Schmidt is the only one in the world who thinks there is no cyberwar.

I have attended NSA briefings from the people who manage the operations/response center and they are very clear about the levels of attacks and the sophistication of those attacks. It is bad and getting worse. These are not independent hackers but nation states.

The FBI even says that attacks on government web sites alone are now at 1.6 Billion a month. That is billion with a “B”.

The British equivalent of NSA, GCHQ is mentioned in the above article.

So much for feeling safe.

Weren't the folks who ordered an Intel Core i7 surprised when they got a Styrofoam fake instead? Well, yes. But we still haven't heard from Newegg how this happened. However the fake was incredibly well done. So props to that. We also discuss Apple's first iPad ad and Ubisoft's incredible DRM failure.

Hi Buzz Crew,

Love hearing the old gang back together again!

With censorship being a hot topic in the news lately, I thought you might like to see this. I recently tried to place some Pay Per Click advertisements on Bing using the Microsoft Ad Center. Once the ads were created, I was told that they needed to be reviewed before they would be turned live on the search engine. This is something Google does as well with their AdWords program, most likely to prevent obvious fraud or hate messages.

Imagine my surprise when I received the attached message a few days later. All three of my ads were rejected. Why? Because they included the word “iPhone”.

We in the tech community are quick to admonish Apple for it’s censorship in the App Store — and rightfully so. It would seem that Microsoft is just as guilty. The iPhone may be a competitor to the Zune and Windows Mobile 7 Classic Pink Phone thingy, but shouldn’t their search engine be unbiased?

I see a dangerous trend developing here…

Hey Buzz crew,

Recently you talked about an increase in android market share this year, and I thought I would share my experience:

We allow employees to use their personal smart to sync with our network for email, and calendar. Well last year I help set up pretty much all Iphones (with the exception of one Palm Pre), but this year the only phones I've helped users with are Android based phones, even more astonishing is that they are all different devices, no one is buying the same model android phone, I've set up Motorola Cliqs, Droids, HTC Droid Eris, HTC Hero, and the Samsung Moment.

No Nexus one yet, but I think a lot of that has to do with not being able to just walk in to a store and play with it.

I checked my email this morning and found I can no longer be an Amazon Associate because I live in Colorado. Essentially, in Colorado if a company has a “controlled group” that makes money in Colorado, then they are considered to have a “presence in this state”. The bill would require Amazon to charge sales tax on all Colorado sales. Interestingly enough I never heard about this from Amazon or locally (and I’m a daily newspaper reader)! If I had a heads up I would have wrote my congress. Are there other companies that will suffer from this, or was it targeted directly at Amazon?

http://www.leg.state.co.us/CLICS/CLICS2010A/csl.nsf/fsbillcont3/B30F574193882B4B872576A80026BE0C?Open&file=1193_rev.pdf

Good thing I don’t depend on making money from the associate program, or I would be out of luck.

Thanks, and great show!

Molly,

Why would anyone want to develop for the iPhone/iPad? For the same reason that people develop for the Xbox, or the PS3 (particularly services like the PSN and Xbox Live Arcade). This kind of treatment of developers happens all the time in the console gaming development cycle, it just happens behind closed doors most of the time. That doesn’t mean it isn’t wrong, but Apple’s “treatment” of developers is hardly unprecedented and because of that it’s unlikely to negatively impact the number of developers who want to develop for their platforms.

Besides, I think all this housecleaning is leading up to something. What? I don’t know, but it seems odd for them to suddenly pounce on certain apps and certain kinds of apps without warning. I foresee some major changes to their app store (and app submission process) coming soon – maybe more clarity on what apps will and will not be accepted?

Anyway, love the show, and Molly’s rants!

(Oh and also Molly, you mentioned that you don’t think the iPad will sell very well and I have UNDENIABLE, SCIENTIFIC PROOF that you’re wrong! In Mass Effect 2 (which is, in the future) everyone is walking around with an iPad-esque tablety device! SCIENCE.)

Hi buzz crew,

I was just listening to the episode 1177 where you talking about the new TIVO’s and how if you wanted wifi you would need to buy a $90 add on. I thought I’d share with you what I’ve done to get around buying all the add on adapters companies try to nickel and hundred dollar you to death. I use an Apple Airport Express to extend my wifi to my home theatre and I’ve connected a 8 port switch to it. While this setup is technically more at roughly $125 the Airport Express gives you AirTunes which is a pretty cool feature. I currently have my Xbox, an older PS3 that has wireless G and Slingbox connected this way all thinking they`re wired with plenty of room to expand my wireless living room. If you wanted to save some money you could always configure a $50 wireless router as a wifi extender and use the 4 wired ports in the back.

Hope this helps,

On episode 1178, the discussion about Apple’s patents made me think what would have happened to the

automobile industry if Henry Ford had patented his ideas.

According to wikipedia, Ford was the first to place the steering wheel on the left, in the Model T,

and all other automobile companies soon copied that idea. Imagine if Ford had patented steering

wheel placement, and all other car companies has been prevented from placing the steering wheel on

the left of the vehicle?

That may too trivial an example … so what if Ford had patented the idea of an assembly line?

Would modern industry even exist?

On today's show, Apple wants to wipe all HTC phones from the face of the earth, apparently because Steve Jobs is just grouchy about this whole business. Donald and Molly engage in a nice long talk about the validity of software patents, and then we wonder whether anyone would actually line up to buy a new 3D HDTV. As a former BB user (Storm – terrible, Tour – sweet, Droid – well, does!), I think that this hardware combo could be huge. It’s also reported to be running OS 6.0 (but fails imo with an expected 360×480 screen resolution).

Was it Tom that predicted Palm will be bought out in 2010? Hmm WebOS + BBEmail could be the spark RIM needs to drive more handsets into the consumer bases, outside of enterprise. If RIM were smart, they’d pull a MS and work from the ground up.

Hi JaMoTo. I’m Rodrigo from Chile (Santiago) and i wanted to send you information for future natural or human caused disasters.

there is a Kenyan service called Ushahidi (means “testimony” in Swahili),which basically collects info related to a catastrophe by mail, sms and twitter and then filters it so there are no duplicate results to then place it into a map.

the value to this service is to stay informed and for rescue services to locate people in immediate need of help or rescue.

i came across this service recently but apparently local emergency response services have used it successfully to assist people.

i tell you this so others know about this and if or when they may see themselves involed in something like this they know where to ask for assistance or how to help.

this service has been used in Kenya, Congo and Haiti and has proven to be extremely valuable.

btw, twitter wasn’t much of value and old land line phones along with regular radio were my information source right after the earthquake. another good reason to keep good old technologies with us.

Hey BOL crew! Theres been a lot of talk recently about the arbitrary Apple App Store policies and their rejecting of random apps. It seems to me that if Apple really wanted this control, what they should have done from the beginning is use the gaming console model for the iPhone. Everyone knows and pretty much accepts that Nintendo controls exactly what types of games are allowed on the DS, and Sony wont allow a Wobble iBoobs type app anytime soon on the PSP. Portable consoles are really expensive to develop for and entirely controlled by the manufacturer for better or for worse.

So I think Apples problem is they opened it up so much that it seems too much like an open platform, and now people feel like they should be able to put whatever type of app they want on it. I think Apple got themselves in to this mess and now they have to live with it. Give up the battle and allow the users to decide, otherwise the exodus to places like Android wont be long in coming!

OK, so the violin analogy wasn’t perfect!

So, at the risk of being re-mocked, here’s an improved analogy: Let’s

say CNet decides to do away with the familiar guitar music that opens

the show. Instead, JaMoTo will open the show by singing a cute little

Buzz Out Loud jingle each day--in harmony! Oh, and you have to write

the jingle. And it has to change every week. Don’t want to do that one

little thing to humanize the show?? Typical techie attitude!

OK, same problem… that may not help the show! But I stand by the

original point: let’s not take it for granted that everyone should

feel as comfortable (or competent) doing the things that come very

naturally to us.

Dude buzz crew get your history straight. WWI was started because some Serbian nationalist guy shot a Duke from Austria and then everyone had deals with each other so as soon as the two countries went to war all of friggin Europe went to war. Although this would be a perfect analogy if then Google, (and possibly other Android manufacturers who are worried about getting sued) jump in, where as if they wait to be sued before entering, then it is more like WWII where a lot of countries didn’t really get involved until they were attacked or threatened. Anyways love the show

I hate to nitpick, but Modern Warfare 2 is not the best selling game in history. New Super Mario Bros on the DS has outsold MW2. Nintendogs, Pokemon, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Bros. Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, and a whole lot more.

Sure it's sold a lot, but it is not even close to being the biggest selling game in history. Please don't say such things if you don't know if you are correct or not..

Enjoy the show

Hey Buzz,

I think we will find out that the Zune 30 and PS3 outage have the same thing in common. A toshiba chip will be found to be incorrectly checking for leap year. This is causing the computer to come up with an out of range date. For security reasons this causes a failure to connect to PSN. Poor coding in a third party component is causing this. The newer PS3 models are using a different chip altogther or it has been condensed into another chip. This is why you do not need to be on the internet for it to take effect. You only need your clock set correctly. It happened about midnight GMT. So this means it is calculating time in GMT, probalbly minutes and seconds since Jan 1, 2000.

http://gazzettadipublius.blogspot.com/2010/03/ps3-and-zune-30-connection.html

Just a thought

Allan

——

Last week I submitted an application to the Apple App Store called “DuckPhone”. The application is simple, you can tap to hear the sound of a Duck quacking, and you can send the sound as a ringtone. It is based on a meme that arose from a television show, but that detail is somewhat irrelevant. Admitidly, the application is of limited functionality, but I think there are many people who would enjoy it, so I submitted it to Apple. To my surprise, I received the following email:

“Dear Atlantia Software LLC,

We’ve reviewed your application DuckPhone and we have determined that this application contains minimal user functionality and will not be appropriate for the App Store.

If you would like to share it with friends and family, we recommend you review the Ad Hoc method on the Distribution tab of the iPhone Developer Portal for details on distributing this application among a small group of people of your choosing or if you believe that you can add additional user functionality to DuckPhone we encourage you to do so and resubmit it for review.

Sincerely,

iPhone App Review Team”

Seriously? My jaw literally dropped as I read this. Yes, the application is limited in functionality, but it does not violate any of the terms I agreed to when I became an iPhone Developer. This application harms nobody, but rather than let it live or die on it’s own merit, Apple has decided to now move into an even more gray area, where it can approve or reject applications based on its subjective view of what is or isn’t useful. How is this application more or less useful than the hundreds of fart applications, some that have sold millions of copies. How is this application more or less useful than the countless re-distribution of single books as applications. How is this application more or less useful than countless other applications that provide limited functionality, but were still graciously approved by Apple?

This is a line I had hoped would not be crossed, but sadly it has been. I’m not sending this email because the world will be deprived if they can’t experience this application, but rather, in hopes that some or all of you will publish this story so that the public at large continues to hear about the ridiculous behavior of Apple in matters such as these. As time goes on, this platform is becoming more of a burden on developers, this will in turn lead to talented people moving on to more open platforms. In the end, the customer loses, and I sincerely hope Apple will realize this.

Thank you for listening,

Nick

——

Hey guys,

I was surprised to hear you mocking the Twitter-resistant musicians

You’d all revolt! How about a little empathy for the uninitiated?

Hi Tom:

Now here’s a 3D TV technology I think I could love… “flying copter- pixel” displays. I’m not a very big fan of the current 3D technologies (glasses mandatory), but this might change my views if it ever becomes a viable technology and ready for the marketplace. It brings to mind 3D Star Wars chess boards. I would love to hear your thoughts & comments on it. Keep up the great work on your webcast … it’s great to see Molly back on the show!

The reason the Apple lockdown of apps makes me uncomfortable is that

Hi Buzz Crew,

On episode 1172, Molly said she would spend some time figuring out what patent she would get on a shirt from Braindex. My suggestion would be US Patent #6360693. It is a patent for an ‘animal toy’ that looks very much like what most of us would call a stick (see Figure 1 in the attached pdf copy). I love the part that suggests that it could be made from wood and built to float in water. It is not very high tech but I wish I would have thought of it…

Love the show

The EU wants Google to warn people before they make their street view

warn them it’s coming, this practice will only get worse…. or is it

Hey guys,

I understand that Apple’s strict choices in the App Store are upsetting, but I’d like to submit a question: why should that store be treated differently from any other physical store? You don’t expect Wallmart or Best Buy to stock every single product that comes to the market, right? You don’t get upset because they don’t stock every “Wobble Boobs Bobble Chest” latex toy. Even if it’s about shelf space, you don’t think that Amazon should reference all the products in existence… And I don’t think you sternly warn Target against the woes and dangers of censorship if they decide to take some products off the shelves because of this or that reason… It’s their store, they want to create a certain atmosphere for their customers, and if they don’t want to carry a certain item that they deem offensive of even just not appropriate for them, they can do that.

So why should Apple be treated differently? If we don’t like their choices, it’s up to us (or up to Android) to create a different store that’ll have more stuff… Any merit to that argument?

Ok, just to be clear: I’m fairly certain I’m wrong, I just want Molly to tell me why.

Hi Buzz Crew,

Long time Aussie listener, got a story you may be interested in. As you may be aware, the Australian government have proposed a mandatory internet filter to “protect” Australians from content the government determines is inappropriate. Well recently Senator Conroy (Australian Broadband Minister) has been caught out censoring his own site by implementing some code in his tag cloud to not display the term “ISP Filtering” to visitors. It’s good to know our government are unlikely to filter out content for political purposes Great job with the show guys, welcome back Molly!

I think Apple’s policies make more sense if you think of them not as “censorship” (meaning, based on moral values) but as “controlling how the store looks.” Apple spends a lot of energy to make sure that their stores (physical and virtual) look “nice” and people have a good experience, especially a good first impression. I have heard people complain about these type of apps creeping into search results in unrelated categories, and (unsurprisingly) being in the high rated lists that Apple uses to show off the best apps. Does anyone really think that Apple is “moral” enough to reject some companies money? If the policy were based on morals, there would be no exceptions, but since publishers that have a reputation as ‘classy’ (relatively speaking) are left in. I think this is primarily a case of Apple trying to weed out a bunch of apps, and trying to craft a policy to meet that.

I’m not saying I agree or disagree with this…I don’t like arbitrary policies, and if I were developing for the iphone, I would hate that part of the process, but as a consumer, I would hate for 3 of every 4 apps to be “bikini girls”, because then the store is not as valuable.

Hello,

Regarding the discussion about Google execs being held criminally liable by an Italian court for a video showing a scene of physical abuse of a disabled kid, in show 1172, I think it was brought up that if Google’s system of flagging works, whereby the video got removed anyway 2 months after being posted, then isn’t that enough for the courts? I am completely sympathetic to this view, but just this morning I listened to lastnight’s Marketplace podcast on which it was reported that Google did not take down the video even after complaints were raised until contacted by Italian police, after two months.

With this slightly different angle, the question becomes ‘why did Google not have a more vigorous flag-based removal-pending-approval auto-takedown system in place?’ Suddenly my sympathies are reversed. This does seem like Google to omit a clear vehicle of utilizing public participation and feedback, a la Gmail having no useful customer support forums (only a Google group).

Thanks smiley emoticon

Talk about a sentence custom-designed to send a chat room off the rails. But the actual topic of discussion was the massive insecurity of the global GPS network, which is totally susceptible to sat-nav jamming. Also, Apple continues to suffer under its terrible, self-imposed burden of censorship, and we are ALL GOING TO DIE FROM THE INTERNET! --Molly

Just listened to show 1171 and was wondering if the people doing the survey on buying broadband asked if the people they surveyed currently have internet access through other means?

For instance, I don’t have broadband because I “can’t afford it” but I use wifi on my netbook at coffee shops, libraries, and friends’ houses for free… thus making nearly any broadband price “too expensive” in comparison.

Figured this might add another angle to the discussion.

Hi Gang,

In my post USA over Canada fervor I punched “RYAN MILLER USA” into the old Google Search bar and hit the shopping tab. Most of the hits that came up were for premiere goalie extraordinaire Ryan Miller, but one shirt was for this:

http://www.braindex.com/t-shirt-for-us-patent-6435299-invented-by-miller-ryan-096436533

A t-shirt of a patent made by some guy with the name Ryan Miller. Apparently this website, braindex.com makes shirts based on patents. Actually not just shirts-they’ll make mouse pads and mugs and whatever you want-all with the patent as the design.

I am in no way trying to do a commercial for this web site, but I have got to think that a good number BOL fans (and probably a fair number of hosts) could find something on here they wanted to buy.

File this under “how great is that??” Too bad I can’t get some trademark registrations like this…but that would kind of defeat the point of trademark.

eh.

Take care!

Dear Tom, Molly and whomever is occupying the third chair.

First time emailer, long time listener.

Unlike during previous seasons of AMERICAN IDOL, this year the proverbial powers that be have allowed the contestants to interact via officially sanctioned social media accounts on twitter, facebook and because it’s a FOX owned property myspace. Since I figured IDOL is nothing more than a giant popularity contest anyways and I clearly have too much time on my hands, I decided to take it upon myself to aggregate each contestants followers in order to see which contestant is the most popular online. Figuring popularity might equate to votes and thus help predict the winner.

Why should the BOL audience care about this? They shouldn’t! Except that my data conclusively shows that myspace is officially over: See for yourself at http://thetvaddict.com/2010/02/22/american-idol-the-top-24-by-the-numbers/

Hey My Buzz-lympians-

Seems a man here in the UK has come up with a more intelligent Jumpdrive-

1. It can be located by GPS with-in 30 meters- (another review I found said they got it located with-in 10 feet)

2. If the password is incorrectly attempted after a set number of times, the key deletes all memory

3. It can be paired with a specific laptop to control the ability to turn on/off that laptop

4. You can send a text message to the device and it will delete all the data

Welcome to MI6!!!

Very cool-

Read originally about it in a local paper (http://is.gd/8ZGdk), but here is the direct link to the product:

http://www.exacttrak.com/security-guardian-p-288.html

After the fiasco of the NHS person who left a jumpdrive with most of the personal info of the NHS database on a train, this is being considered a requirement for all the workers! I’m all for it…

In the story above, a man is arrested and threatened with a possible custodial sentence for tweeting whilst frustrated as a nearby airport is closed due to being snowbound. His tweet (admittedly ill-considered) was “Crap! Robin Hood Airport is closed. You’ve got a week… otherwise I’m blowing the airport sky high!”.

I hope I didn't sound too offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing in conveying this story to you!

Not sure if you all had heard or not, but this was news to me- this year’s olympic medals are at least partially created from recycled computer and cell phone components!

http://www.core77.com/blog/technology/from_recycled_computer_waste_olympic_medals_15979.asp?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+core77%2Fblog+%28Core77.com%27s+design+blog%29&utm_content=Google+Reader

This is actually a really interesting video as it not only talks about the green/sustainability efforts involved, but also, about the design concept (aka why are the medals so wavy! lol).

Anyway, enjoy

Love,

Today on Buzz Out Loud, fun kills and companies kill fun. Apple kills all the good boob stuff in the App Store, Google's building its Daemon-Skynet empire by getting into the power business, and Italy thinks 3D glasses can give you pink-eye. Also, Microsoft and Yahoo finally get that search deal done, about a thousand episodes after anyone cares. And Helen calls again and breaks Molly. --Molly

Hey, Buzz-wardians… Jersey Chris the video editor here.

In regards to your story in episode 1167 about Red Box not being able to release new movies until 28 days after the official release date… this does absolutely nothing to sway me into buying DVDs. I rent DVDs because I don’t want to buy them.

I have no interest in owning the DVD. I watch a movie once or twice and then I’m done with it. I don’t religiously follow release dates with giddy anticipation and neither do the other “Red Boxers” I stand in line with while looking at what’s available. When the movie comes out on Red Box, it’s out… A day after the official release or a month after the official release. I’ll rent it then. So the extra month I’ll have to wait… Meh.

Peace!

Jersey Chris

Hi Buzz Crew,

It’s been a while since last time I mailed you guys.

This is an interesting image that was up on digg today, I think you already saw it:

Pirated DVD vs. Legal DVD

This image express our point about the whole movie industry treating it’s customers as criminals. And it’s exactly what I feel when I put a DVD/BluRay in my player.

Dear BOL

First off LOVE THE SHOW, glad I got that out of the way.

In episode 1168 the two caller were indeed the funniest callers I have ever heard. Now the second caller said something about getting better porn when Comcast goes to Xfinity. Now as a Dishnetwork customer I thought that this was the name of an Adult Channel that was offered on this service when I first heard and seen the name. To which started an e-mail about how no company checks names anymore, but it is not the name of a channel . So I was wondering where this guy went wrong, did a quick google search and found this article: http://www.multichannel.com/article/441190-Comcast_Counts_To_Xfinity_.php and in the second to the last paragraph of the store was this statement: "Banse said Comcast will add adult content to the Xfinity TV service, including programming from Cinemax, once it has implemented parental controls for the site sometime around the end of January or the middle of February."

Hope this helps.

Now for the fun part, could we get Alex from Austria to call back up and say "MORE DOTS", "MORE DOTS NOW"

LOVE THE SHOW

We have two awesomely inexplicable voice mails today, we discuss the rise of Zeus (the botnet), and Ubisoft's new DRM scheme sends us into a synchronized rage. We also chat with Peter Brantley, co-founder of the Open Book Alliance, about the latest twist and turn in the Google Books settlement attempt. Short version: copyright law sucks, but not quite as much as class-action law. What a mess. --Molly

2 things on 1167:

1. Theater rollouts are staggered in typical Hollywood fashion so that Europe is at least a month behind the USA. So European theaters are not overreacting to Disney’s unilateral decision to change the DVD release schedule; for these theaters this is not a long tail, it is the tookus itself. They are reacting to a disruption of their business model.

2. Wikileaks does not accept corporate cash. Google can’t donate money directly to them. Not sure but I think they don’t accept cash from institutions of any kind. Pretty sure it has to be from individuals.

Cool.

Hi BOl,

I was watching episode 1167 and the comments made on visual depth perception. While I agree that research is needed on the topic, I find if highly unlikely that the brain ignores other depth cues when watching 3D movies or TV. Binocular disparity is only relevant when judging the distances of relatively close objects. This breaks down at further distances because the visual angle between the two eyes becomes too small. At greater distances, we tend to use other cues to judge depth; such as size constancy, motion parallax, and relative depth cues (ie., using other objects in the environment to determine if it is closer or further away from you). Finally, as far as I am aware binocular dysmorphia is a hypothetical condition and not one that has been proven to exist.

In relation to talking on a cell phone while driving, my previous lab has published several papers on the topic. There are actually two things occurring while talking on a cell phone that can be associated with accidents. 1) A general lack of awareness to their environment: Studies have shown many accidents occurring AFTER a phone conversation has ended because people were still thinking about the conversation and not driving. 2) Diverted spatial attention: Some studies provide conflicting evidence for hands-free kits. These can be explained by the placement of the loudspeaker. If the loudspeaker is placed to the driver's right, their attention is diverted to the right while conversing. However, if the loudspeaker is placed directly in front of them, their attention is maintained directly in front of them and thus on the road. This dramatically improves drivers' performance.

I apologize for the long email but I thought it was necessary.

All the best,

Jason

In your discussion about the possible risks involved with 3d Tom made a comment about roller-coasters not being harmful to the brain. I thought I would pass on this article which claims otherwise:

Well, ok, 3D might not make you go blind, but we think the issue warrants further study. At least, Molly and Rafe think it warrants further study. Tom's just baiting us. Also, AT&T gets a Windows Phone 7 victory, Warner is still keeping DVDs on life support, and PDFs are just plain dangerous. Also, our hearts go out to Tesla Motors today after a tragic plane crash in Palo Alto. --Molly

Hey Buzz Crew,

Just wanted to let you guys know, in case you didn’t already see, that

Molly Wood’s Molly Rants article on Google Buzz is quoted in EPIC’s

FTC filing against Google (page six), along with articles by CNET’s

Tom Krazit and Chris Matyszcyk.

On a related note, I love it when tech stories involve legal

documents, because then I can read them at work they look just like

everything else that I’m doing.

Love the show

Maybe I am missing something here, but wouldn’t it be a bit excessive

to provide a gigabit broadband connection. It essentially rules out

the usage of a laptop or any other wireless device unless you want to

waste a minimum of 70% of the speed (since the maximum throughput for

802.11n is only 300Mbps)! I suppose if you want to be chained to an

Ethernet port it is fine, but other than that it just seems like a

waste. Interestlingly though my laptop from six years ago has gigabit

Ethernet while my wife’s new laptop and my new desktop do not. Maybe

I am missing something, but it just seems like a waste of bandwith.

Hey, Buzz crew,

In episode 1166, you talked about how AT&T and other cellular carriers

wanted to create a huge app store to service all smartphones, and you

also played a voicemail from Jason who asked if we’d ever see the day

where one application development platform would run on all the

different handsets. Yet you seemed to miss the announcement that Adobe

made at the Mobile World Congress that it plans to bring its Adobe AIR

platform to mobile devices, starting with versions that will run on

Android and Blackberry. If they reach their goal, application

developers could write their application once in Adobe AIR and it will

run on any mobile or desktop operating system. That would make the

“Wholesale App Community” that AT&T is planning a lot easier to

implement, as any AIR application in that app store would be available

to any and all of the handsets.

Here are a few links regarding the Adobe announcement:
