S.T.A.R.S. names spelling bee winners

Moreno Valley's Students-Teachers Achieving Real Success program announced the winners of its first annual spelling bee in June. Preliminaries ran March 3 through April 29 at all 41 S.T.A.R.S. after-school program sites.

In the kindergarten through second grade category, Umali Horne of Victoriano Elementary took first place and Nancy Ochoategui of La Jolla Elementary took second. In the third through fifth grade category, Kayla Whitehead of Val Verde Elementary took first, and Hughston Jefferson of Triple Crown Elementary took second. In the sixth through eighth grade category Kendall Goslee of Vista Verde Middle took first and Robert Benett of Mountain View Middle School was second.

Valley View High alum gets bachelor's degree

Lauren Brosamer, of Moreno Valley, graduated cum laude from the University of San Diego on May 25. She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration with a minor in sociology and made the dean's list for three semesters. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity and plans to pursue a master's degree in sports management.

She is a 2004 graduate of Valley View High School in Moreno Valley. Her parents are Shawn and Kim Brosamer.

Canyon Springs High alum earns degree

Caroline Wesemuller, a 2004 graduate of Canyon Springs High School in Moreno Valley, graduated from Revelle College, one of the colleges at UC San Diego, with a degree in Human Biology and a minor in Psychology in June 2008.

Wesemuller has been the vice president of communications for the Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children for the past two years and is a member of the Pre-Pharmacy Society. She has volunteered at Scripps' Memorial Hospital and worked in neuroscience and autism labs. She was also selected to travel abroad to a children's clinic in Costa Rica.

Box Springs student in gifted program

Jalen Layne, a fifth-grade student at Box Springs Elementary School in Moreno Valley, was awarded a full scholarship from Renaissance Learning to the Summer Institute for the Gifted program at UCLA.

Agriculture group awards scholarships

The Coachella Valley Chapter of California Women for Agriculture presented scholarships to nine Coachella Valley students for continuing their education in agriculture or the culinary and hospitality industries.

Scholarships went to Corey Zaparinuk, of La Quinta High School, who wants to become a zoo vet; Celia Rodriguez, of Desert Hot Springs High School, who is majoring in animal science at Cal Poly Pomona; Darrah Richard, of La Quinta High School, working toward a degree in chemistry; Heather Carmody, of Desert Christian High School, working toward a career in medical research in virology and immunology; and La Quinta High School Culinary Institute graduates Kirstyn Bielawa, Francisco Calderon, Kimberly Seto, Erica Hernandez and Raquel Ramirez.

Street fair proceeds to fund scholarships

College of the Desert's Alumni Association is using proceeds from its street fair to award $75,000 in freshman scholarships to local high schools and $6,400 to local middle school students.

High school winners were at Amistad, Coachella Valley, Indio, La Familia, Desert Mirage, La Quinta, Mt. San Jacinto, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, West Shores, Desert Hot Springs, Horizons, Desert Hot Springs Alternative and Summit Continuation.

Achievement awards went to middle school students at Chauilla Desert Academy, West Shores, Torro Canyon, John Glenn, Horizons, Indio, Thomas Jefferson, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Woodrow Wilson, Nellie Coffman, Raymond Cree, Desert Springs, Colonel Mitchell Page, James Workman and Ramon Alternative Academy Independent Study for Palm Springs.
